If you want it all really flexible, you would have to make the spells (and probably the skills too) all data driven via XML or config file style. Like what you did with the monsters back then. Being immune to miscasts for healing spells or even all non-hostile spells would be a nice boon to make white magic more attractive. And yes, "extend" did extend the duration of all running spells. Even if etherealness does allow you to walk through walls, that does not have to cost just one action.
You could also make it non-weavable. Or how about it costing mana each turn it runs, or even crystals.

The best, but also the requiring the most work :roll:, would be to animate all charmed monster attacks at the same time. Just as all regeneration animations have to come as one. That would then take just as much time as any single animation. And be hilarious to watch.

The biggest spells in earth magic for me were "remove traps" and "remove boulders". The first one makes basic magic redundant and can remove undiscovered traps, the second one has great synergies with Midas Touch and Energy from Stones. old post, but still.. With "Dark Magic" you probably meant "Dark Mana" spell in PB laby. That one does NOT make mana from health. It makes mana from bone tiles and is thus a strictly limited resource. You have to walk to those tiles and the tile will vanish on use. Also you need to step onto the til...

As long as you require 64 bit OS, you can also assume 64 bit CPUs obviously. So that'd be Athlon 64 or Pentium 4 at least - older ones are not 64 bit.
Those two both support MMX, SSE, SSE2 and SSE3.

The download link for the 1.6.1 Windows version gives a 404.
