There are various special tiles that can be activated or interacted with in the game. This section will describe a number of them:
The Sanctum regenerates all your lifepoints. There is one in every level of the Labyrinth. It has 3 charges. The Akolyth trait it will also cure poison, break curses and replenish your mana (while Forsaken will prevent you from using the Sanctum).
The Nexus regenerates all your mana. There is one in every level of the Labyrinth. It has 3 charges.
These stairs lead down to the next level. When you reach this you will be transported to the next level where there are more dangerous monsters and possible more treasure. You will also be awaraded an additional experience level every new level you reach!
Using these stairs will bring you back to the previous level. You cannot go up on the first level.
This is a portal leading to the next level (instead of stairs down). A portal leads to a new Special Level with unique features and challenges. There are many different special levels and each one will only appear once per game. Examples include the Forgotten Swamp, Mystic Forest or the Halls of Illusion.
There are numerous different bone remains scattered around the levels. Disturbing bones will sometimes awaken and animate a bone lurker which you must defeat. Many Black Magic spells utilize bone remains in some way.
When you use the pickaxe on this field you destroy it and get a passage. Sometimes very helpful!
This is an unexplored room. Walking into it will explore the room which can contain both beneficial and dangerous contents. The Staff Pieces required to win the game can be found in rooms.
When you use the shovel on this field you will find some treasure. Can be everything from Weapons/Armor/Light/Gold to magical Items.
Leads to the next level but you can only use it when you have a rope, the Climbing trait or the spell featherfall.
A closed doors can be either locked or unlocked. A locked door requires a Silver Key or the Thievery trait to lockpick.
This merchant will offer you his or her goods in exchange for your gold!
In the first versions of the game they did. We decided later to remove it. It was a gameplay decision. Some players like it other do not. In laby monsters only block the way to the exit as its supposed to be a 'tactical-roquelike'
Remember this is an abstract roquelike. We know it would make sense to just kill the thief and then pickup the stolen items. BUT it would make stealing senseless! Because the thieves are very weak and everybody can kill them! So it will NEVER be possible to get stolen items back!
Various equipment, magic and effects can increase armour. Armour absorbs Physical damage before your health is damaged. It acts like an additional pool of health that regenerates every turn (based on your Armour Regeneration statistic). This means you can rest a few turns between combat to recover your armour, but be aware of your hunger and thirst!
No its not! Thats one of the traditions of this game. The game is meant to last only very short not like other roquelikes where you play the same character forever. We want you to create a new character with different traits every time you play. So to see all the traits you have to try around with them. Thats all Lost Labyrinth is living from ... Combinations ...
When you collect all 7 parts of the staff of the last covenant you finish the game alive! You can enter your name in the highscore as usual but get a sign that you survived! The other way to finish the game is by completing level 150.
There are three versions of Lost Labyrinth:
The classic one is written in blitzbasic which is not developed anymore. It was later rewritten in PureBasic and sold as Extended Edition (with additional content such as new traits, monsters and spells). The newest version (Lost Labyrinth DX) has a completely rewritten game engine in C++ with SDL2 as backend. This allows for better portability, maintenance and tooling for further development. Lost Labyrinth DX features everything from the older version and adds new stuff while trying to keep the same traditions as the previous games.
